Due to the triangular shape of the site and a larger than normal (10' foot) side yard setback, it became necessary for the 405 square foot addition to be broken up into segments that could be offset from one another creating a stair stepped floor plan. A resulting benefit to this strategy was the creation of an interior courtyard. The courtyard ties together the existing family room, dining room, and new master bedroom. The result is a private indoor/outdoor room perfect for entertaining or the solitary relaxation of a cocktail beneath the stars. Secondly, the courtyard gives greater continuity to the to the interior connecting several spaces that would otherwise remain separated. in contrast to the interior courtyard is an open wood patio to the north that opens up to the backyard Located at the intersection of these two exterior spaces, the master bedroom is meant feel like a pavilion pulled away from the rest of the house with a lightness and openness that creates a flow between the two outdoor spaces.
