Lakeside Residence

Lakeside guest house is a 1,240 SF residence with one bedroom and one bathroom adjacent to a lake in Austin Texas.  The home's design is derived from a melding of two unique objects: pre-Columbian weaved baskets and sailboats.  The objects were chosen not only for there value to the owner but for their intrinsic qualities.  The design of the home takes it's influence from these objects in order to generate unique forms infused with the character of the selected objects.  The goal is to create a hybrid of the two borrowing qualities from each, at the same time creating a design that is truly unique.
The sleek lines and gentle curves of sailboats give them a grace and beauty.  They have a sense of craftsmanship inherent in their design.  Like sailboats, the weaved baskets are also crafted objects.  At the same time they are ornate, detailed, and archaic.  The home's design integrates their use of repetitive forms and patterns.
The curving north wall is composed of a series of treated wood boards cut in an alternating wave pattern.  Aptly titled the "Weaved Wall" it simulates the texture of a weaved basket when the boards are stacked.
The south wall is brick with a criss crossing brick pattern influenced by the patterns of weaved baskets.

The curving and rounded walls of the floor plan and exposed wood beams, and interior woodwork are influenced by the form of a sailing ship.
